DEWALT DW734 Benchtop Planer Review

Bench or benchtop planers are the best planers to have when it comes to thickness control (even thickness planers are limited to 4-6 inches before their accuracy and evenness starts getting wonky). With that in mind, the DeWalt DW734 is among the best bench planers around in light of its specs. It’s mobile like a handheld yet provides as much smoothening out action pound-for-pound as your typical joiner planer with its powerful 15-amp, 20,000 RPM motor.

Powerful 15-Amp Motor for Deep, Clean Cuts

From handhelds to even thickness planers, there’s a limit of depth in cutting or even the type of wood they could cut (hardwoods are a no-no). This is not the case with the DeWalt DW734. It’s a long-term investment of sorts that allow you to buy rough stock with uneven bumps and even the densest of planks so that you can even them out yourself with your handy DW734. With this planer model, it’s easier to do pretty much anything relating to woodworking.

Reversible, Disposable Knives for Convenience

The knives used by the DeWalt DW734 in order to cut down wood are razor sharp. However, they’re also disposable and reversible. Unlike traditional disposable knives, DeWalt knives last 30% longer, so you’re going to get more value for your investment with these razors. You’ll also prevent having to deal with resharpening shenanigans with these replaceable knives. It’s costly and time-consuming to have to resharpen knives, so why not simply replace them so that they’re sharp all the time?

Effective Dust and Debris Management

Aside from making it more effortless to create custom materials and achieving great results, the DW734 planer also has a dust-hood included to catch any debris that might fall, thus you won’t have to clean up after yourself with the DeWalt DW734. Every last wood shaving, carving, and sawdust will be caught cleanly by the dust hood or you can buy a standing dust collector (this is sold separately) altogether for efficient debris and chip removal.

Cons

The DeWalt DW734 has few flaws, and many of them root from superior models from its own mother company, DeWalt. More to the point, there are certain things that this versatile planer can’t do that other models, like the DW735 and DW735X could and vice-versa (although across the board – pardon the pun – they all can cut a wide range of hardwoods). They have slight differences and salient features that make them identical and unique from each other at the same time, like planer thickness (the DeWalt DW734 has only 12.5 inches to the 13 inches provided by both the DW735 and DW735X) and a higher RPM capacity (DW735 and DW735X can go up to 20,000 RPM in cutting speed).

Head To Head Comparison between DeWalt Benchtop Planers

  • DW734: The DW734, as already established, handles larger, deeper cuts in hardwoods because of how powerful it’s supposed to be. Every pass is ensured accurate as well thanks to the device’s extra-large thickness scale and material-removal gauge. It even has a four-column carriage lock that reduces in a drastic fashion movement (which causes material damage) or snipe when smoothening out the board’s end.
  • DW735: The DeWalt DW735 is quite similar to its brothers in the sense that it has the same 15-amp motor with a 10,000 RPM cutter head speed. What separates it from the others is that it’s the predecessor to DW735X, so it lacks several features from its its improved “X” version. As for the DW734, the DW735 has has a higher cutting speed; it’s 20,000 RPM versus 10,000 RPM.
  • DW735X: It’s virtually a clone of the DeWalt DW735. However, the DeWalt DW735X comes with out-feed and in-feed tables present in the DW734 but absent in the DW735. What’s more, it has an extra set of 13-inch knives for the cutter head that you can replace any time. It handles the larger cuts and a wider array of materials. Knife changing with the DW735X is also a breeze but it has a bigger cut per inch range compared to DW734.

Conclusion

While it seems that the DeWalt 734 lacks certain features and capacities as the DeWalt DW735 and DeWalt DW735X, these are minor differences such that if you only need a DW734 for your DIY or woodworking needs, there’s no need to add extra bucks to get a DW735 and DW735X. The out-feed and in-feed tables of the DeWalt DW734 are also extra longer than the average planer.

This makes sure that handling those tough hardwood planks is a breeze with its three-knife cutter head that spins at 10,000 RPM (Rotations Per Minute) to provide 96 cuts every inch. The length of the feeds can also support a total of 33.5 inches of material. Meanwhile, its turret depth saves people time when setting the machine at the right depth.
